Jewish Languages (1)
A kind friend obtained for me a copy of Jewish Languages - Theme and Variations (ISBN: 0-91593-801-4) in a charity shop. It was edited by Herbert Paper and it comprised the proceedings of a conference on Jewish languages held at The University of Michigan and New York University in March-April 1975.
The topics were:
• The historical periods of the Hebrew language, by Joshua Blau
• Aramaic and its dialects, by Jonas Greenfield
• Yiddish, by Marvin Herzog
• Judeo-Romance Languages by George Jochnowitz
• Ladino language and literature, by Denah Lida
• Judeo-Persian, by Herbert Paper
• Mediaeval Judeo-Arabic, by Joshua Blau
• The languages of Palestine, by Jonas Greenfield

Jewish Languages (2)
Jewish Language Research Website: http://www.jewish-languages.org/
Around the world, wherever Jews have lived, they have spoken somewhat differently from the non-Jews around them. Their languages have differed by as little as a few Hebrew words or as much as a highly variant grammar. There has been a good deal of research on a number of Jewish languages, including Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish, Judeo-Arabic, Judeo-Italian, Jewish English, and Jewish Neo-Aramaic.
This website displays some of this research and the scholars who create it.

Ladino
An article under the heading "Ladino - A Lost Language?" written by
Dr Jay Levinson and published in the Jewish Tribune newspaper (London, U.K.,
16 October 1998, page 9) refers to the Institute of Ladino, Ma'ale Adumim,
Israel. The Director is Avner Peretz.

Other topics mentioned by Dr Levinson include ...
  1. After the expulsion from Spain in 1492 CE, the name Ladino, a corruption of the word "Latin," was used in the Balkans and Turkey, to distinguish it from Turkish. In Tangier and Tetuan in Spanish Morocco, it was called Haquitiya.
  2. Books include "Me'am Lo'ez" and "Sefer Shemos" (part 1), by Rabbi Yaakov Culi, Constantinople, 1730CE. Sefer Shemos has been translated into Judeo-Arabic. The Library contains over 300 volumes.
  3. Ha-Shofar, a Zionist newspaper written in Ladino and published in Bulgaria at the beginning of the twentieth century CE.
  4. There are between 50,000 and 80,000 people in Israel who have some knowledge of Ladino. The number of Ladino speakers is far fewer.
  5. Israel Radio broadcasts in Ladino.
  6. Aki Yerushalayim is a Ladino journal published three times a year.
  7. Ladino dictionary:

    • Ladino-English English-Ladino Concise Encyclopedic Dictionary.
Authors: Dr E. Kohen and Dalia Kohen-Gordon.
      ISBN: 0-7818 0658 5.
      Publisher: Hippocrene Books Inc, 2000.
      Price: GBP 12.50.

In an article in the [London] Jewish Chronicle for 18 February 2000, page 14,
Ruth Rothenburg wrote: "At a time of far-right prominence in Austria,
the Wiener Library, a renowned Holocaust resource, belatedly celebrated the
60th anniversary of its arrival in London with a [recent] reception at the
German Embassy.
[text deleted]
"The library was born when Dr Alfred Wiener took a German communal
anti-Semitism monitoring collection to Holland in 1933, after Hitler's seizure
of power, building it up into a major archive on Nazi policy. He brought it to
London under British government protection in 1939."
